For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to conduct research in sol-gel chemistry, nanoparticle synthesis, and/or glass or ceramic materials chemistry and processing.  You will be expected to make technical contributions in the area of optical materials science, including the research and development of novel materials, unique material geometries, materials characterization, nanoscience, and fabrication processes including additive manufacturing.  This position is in the Laser Material Science group of the Materials Science Division.
 
Essential Duties
- Perform fundamental science research for the development of new optical materials (glasses, ceramics) for use in high energy, high power laser systems.
- Formulate optical materials (glasses, ceramics, coatings) to achieve desired mechanical, thermal, or optical properties.
- Characterize optical materials and precursors.
- Develop optical materials processes, while meeting tight deadlines.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Materials Science/Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Knowledge of materials science fundamentals, including ceramic materials, glasses, phase transformations, and structure.
- Experience with materials synthesis and processing techniques, including sol-gel chemistry, colloidal chemistry, and ceramics processing.
- Experience with materials science characterization tools, e.g., optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and x-ray diffraction.
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent work, develop engineering models and perform complex data analysis.
- Willingness to work on a variety of projects, and to learn new techniques.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with metrology and characterization of optical components and systems.
- Programming experience with interpreted or compiled languages such as Python, C, Matlab, or Mathematica.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  None.

 

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
