For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Computer Associate to provide technical computer support in a variety of complex system environments. You will work in a challenging, rapidly changing, and team-oriented environment to solve a variety of complex technical problems in a timely manner. This position is within the Global Security Computing Applications Division (GS-CAD) of the Computation Directorate, matrixed to the Quality Assurance (QA) Team in the Security & Protection Program.
 
This position will be filled at either the 320.1 or 320.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Provide expertise on complex installations, configurations, and hardware and/or software upgrades (Red Hat, Enterprise, Linux Desktop, and Server OS platforms).
- Exercise independent judgment to resolve complex systems and network-related problems.
- Provide advanced technical assistance and database administrator support to the user community.
- Collaborate with management, customers, and team members to evaluate and recommend procurements of Windows and/or Linux hardware and software.
- Independently resolve problems, requiring advanced knowledge of one or more platforms (e.g., Windows and/or Linux, VMware, Oracle, etc.).
- Define and develop support, problem analysis, and problem resolution practices and procedures.
- Direct complex troubleshooting activities.
- Maintain appropriate technology, computer security, and safety knowledge.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition, at the 320.2 level
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve highly complex system and network-related problems.
- Serve as a technical leader and an internal and external consultant in an area of expertise, provide highly advanced technical guidance to the user community, and collaborate with customers in the design of their computing environment, as well as mentor and coach employees in their technical and customer service skills and abilities.
- Develop highly advanced software applications in Linux, UNIX, and Windows environments with C++, C, or Java.
 
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related technical experience.
- Broad, in-depth knowledge and technical expertise and experience with Windows and/or Linux operating systems and/or Virtual environments and related hardware.
- Experience directing complex troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities and independently resolve complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise effective customer support skills in a diverse user community with widely varying levels of computer literacy.
- Extensive experience with complex installations, configurations, and hardware and/or software upgrades.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently and interact with a multi-disciplinary staff in a team environment.
- Ability to lift 20 lbs. in a safe and controlled manner.
In Addition, at the 320.2 level
- Highly advanced knowledge of and extensive experience with Windows, and/or Linux operating systems, and/or Virtual environments and related hardware.
- Significant experience mentoring employees in technical skills, as well as serving as a technical team lead on projects, achieving positive results, and driving projects to closure on time and on budget.
 - Recognized as a technical expert with experience in enterprise support tools for management, patching, or software distribution, computer network hardware, software, protocols, and principles, Windows computer security concepts and practices, computer network hardware/software, protocols and principles, and/or Linux operating systems, in addition to experience with virtual server technologies (e.g., VMware), writing intermediate to advanced scripts.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Professional computer certification (e.g., MCSA, MCSE, CompTIA A+, ACSP, Red Hat) or a professional network certification (e.g., CCNA).

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

 

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
