For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for a Mechanical Design Engineer. You will be responsible for the engineering and design of various target diagnostics for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). You will provide engineering for new additions, upgrade to existing hardware, overall coordination, maintenance, and repair of diagnostics. Your work will also involve project management. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
 
These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Develop conceptual designs of mechanical systems, test prototypes, and final diagnostic assembly.
- Work on moderately complex designs and apply principles to a wide variety of hardware design and analysis projects.
- Apply system engineering processes to define requirements, manage risk, analyze design failures to determine cause, and recommend corrective action.
- Evaluate alternative designs from engineering and economic perspectives and present the results at design reviews.
- Provide detail cost and schedule estimates and use work breakdown concepts for project planning and implementation.
- Develop detailed fabrication specifications and interface with vendors.
- Collaborate within a team consisting of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, coordinators, and procurement personnel to resolve complex problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Apply advanced engineering solutions and technical analysis to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on in-depth analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
- Provide technical direction to small teams and work as a primary technical contact on multi-disciplinary teams.
 
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience designing moderately complex hardware to tight requirements, including, high precision, defining system error budgets, high stability, excellent repeatability of motion, tight control of materials, low nuclear activation, etc.
- Experience with system engineering practices, formally managing requirements, and demonstrated ability to lead independent studies on complex problems.
- Experience analyzing tolerances in parts and component stack-ups.
- Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical hardware design principles and familiarity with current fabrication processes.
- Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary project team that may include engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, and coordinators.
- Demonstrated ability to perform and document mechanical engineering analyses such as structural, thermal, or fluid analyses.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Significant experience identifying, defining, and solving multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost effective manner.
- Advanced knowledge of engineering hardware design, fabrication, or testing processes and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree (MS) in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Experience in developing experimental diagnostic hardware and its use in harsh environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of nuclear effects on materials and their use in mechanical design.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
