For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Computational High Explosives (HE) Material Scientist. You will independently work on modeling explosives initiation and detonation at multiple length-scales, be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting research to develop structure-aware HE models incorporating structure-performance relationships, and conduct large-scale simulations with multi-physics codes. This position is in the Reactive Dynamics Group of the Materials Science Division.
 
This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Design and conduct advanced simulations of explosives initiation and detonation.
- Conduct advanced research in predictive HE performance models that incorporate microstructure and constituent chemical-thermal-mechanical properties.
- Serve as the primary technical contact on multi-scale HE modeling.
- Present capabilities and new opportunities in predictive structure-aware HE models to sponsors.
- Prepare and deliver written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results as well as periodic progress reports.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at SES.4 Level
- Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction as a technical leader on projects/programs, while serving as a subject matter expert in structure-aware modeling.
- Develop new ideas and redefine customer requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.
- Actively increase visibility and capabilities of the group both internally and externally to establish collaborations and joint projects and increase customer base.
 
Qualifications
- PhD in material science, chemistry, engineering, physics or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience using HE initiation and detonation models in shock physics codes.
- Significant experience conducting HE simulations at sub-continuum length-scales to explore the effects of constituent properties and microstructure on hot spot mechanisms.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge in computational multi-scale approaches, enriching continuum simulations with lower length-scale information.
- Demonstrated knowledge with development of numerical algorithms for HE models in shock physics codes using parallel computing platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to parameterize and validate simulations given a diverse set of experimental data.  
- Demonstrated advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written reports.
- Demonstrated advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Substantial experience successfully managing multiple projects involving multidisciplinary team members.
- Expert written and verbal communication skills necessary to advise senior management and to positively represent the Program and the Laboratory.
- Widely recognized as a leader in the field of research with high visibility both internally and externally to the Lab.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Experience using software tools (e.g., Dakota, PSUADE, Python) to perform optimization, sensitivity, or uncertainty studies in conjunction with shock physics simulations to accelerate model development, parameterization, or validation.
- Experience using thermochemical equilibrium code (e.g., Cheetah) to expediently calculate the product EOS or other chemical-mechanical-thermal properties for different explosive compositions. 

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

 

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
